How to Assemble Your Sewing Pattern PDF: A Complete Step-by-Step Tutorial - KEEPERHK

Sewing patterns in PDF format are convenient, eco-friendly, and instantly accessible but they do require a bit of assembly. At KEEPERHK, we design our patterns to be easy to print and put together at home. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced sewist, this guide will walk you through the process so you can start sewing with confidence.
Why PDF Patterns?
PDF patterns let you print only the size you need, save money on shipping, and get started right away. Our files include both A4/ US Letter and A0 (copyshop) versions, plus clear layer options so you can print just your size.
Materials You’ll Need
- Printed pattern pages (from the PDF)
- Printer (inkjet or laser)
- Scissors or a rotary cutter
- Tape
- Large flat surface or floor space
Step 1: Download and Prepare the PDF
Download the pattern files.
Open the PDF in a reliable viewer like Adobe Acrobat Reader(free) or your browser’s PDF viewer.
Step 2: Print the Pattern Correctly
Go to File > Print (or press Ctrl + P on Windows / Command + P on Mac).
In the print settings: Set the page size to match the PDF format (A4/US Letter or A0 for copy shop).
Set Scale to 100% or Actual Size.
Print a test page first (any single page with the calibration ruler).
Measure the ruler line, it should match exactly with a measuring tape.
If the measurement is accurate, proceed to print all the pages. If not, double-check your scale settings and printer options before reprinting.

Download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader (if you don't have it already).
It's free and available from Adobe's official website: (https://get.adobe.com/reader/).
Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader:
Go to File > Open and select your pattern file.
Access the Layers panel:
- On the left sidebar, click the Layers icon
- If you don't see the sidebar, enable it via View > Show/Hide > Navigation Panes > Layers.
Select your size(s):
- In the Layers panel, you'll see a list of layers (e.g. UK4/EU32/US1).
- Click the eye icon next to each size you don't want to print to hide those layers
- Leave the eye icon visible only for your desired size(s).
- Keep “keys,” “indicators” turned on, they contain important markings like grainlines, labels, and cutting instructions that apply to all sizes.
- Scroll through the PDF to confirm: only the lines for your selected size(s) should now be visible.
Print your selected size:
- Go to File > Print (or Ctrl + P / Command + P).
- In the print settings:
- Choose your printer.
- Set page size to match the PDF (A4/US Letter or A0).
- Set Scale to 100% or Actual Size.
- Once confirmed, print the full pattern.
After printing, move on to Step 3: Trim the Pages and tape the pages together accurately. Then, make any final fit adjustments to the paper pattern before cutting them out.
Step 3: Sort and Separate Pages
Gather all the pages of the sewing pattern.
Organize them into rows based on the numbering system: numbers represent rows (e.g., 1, 2, 3), and letters represent columns (e.g., A, B, C).
For example, page “A-1 belongs to row 1, column A; “B-1” to row 1, column B; “A-2” to row 2, column A, and so on.
Group all pages for row 1 together, all pages for row 2 together, and continue this process for all rows.
Step 4: Trim Excess for Row 1
Take each page in row 1 (e.g., A-1, B-1, C-1, etc.).
Locate the dotted line on the right side of each page. This line marks the boundary between the pattern content and the excess margin.
Using scissors, cut off the excess paper outside (to the right of) this dotted line for every page in row
Do not trim the top, bottom, or left sides of these pages at this stage.
Step 5: Trim Excess for Rows 2-10
For each page in rows 2 through 10 (e.g., A-2, B-2, A-3, B-3, etc.), identify the dotted lines on both the top and right sides.
Cut off the excess paper outside the dotted line on the top and outside the dotted line on the right for each of these pages.
This prepares the pages to connect with the row above and the page to the right during assembly.
Leave the left and bottom edges untrimmed.
Step 6: Assemble Each Row
Work on one row at a time, starting with row 1, then proceeding to row 2, and so on.
Arrange the pages in order from left to right (e.g., for row 1: A-1, B-1, C-1, etc.).
For each pair of adjacent pages:
Take the first page (e.g., A-1) and align its trimmed right edge with the left edge of the next page (e.g., B-1).
Overlap the edges slightly so that the triangular markers printed near the edges of both pages align.
Adjust the overlap until the triangles combine to form a complete square and an isosceles triangle, indicating correct alignment.
Tape the pages together along the overlapped seam using clear tape.
Repeat this process for all pages within each row until you have a long, continuous strip for each row.
Step 7: Assemble the Rows Together
Once all rows are assembled into horizontal strips, stack them vertically in order from row 1 (top) to row 10 (bottom).
For each pair of adjacent rows:
Take the upper row (e.g., row 1) and align its bottom edge with the trimmed top edge of the lower row (e.g., row 2).
Overlap the edges so that the triangular markers on the bottom of the upper row and the top of the lower row match up.
Adjust the overlap until the triangles form a square and an isosceles triangle, confirming proper alignment.
Tape the rows together along the overlapped seam.
Continue this process, connecting row 2 to row 3, row 3 to row 4, and so forth, until all rows are joined into one large pattern sheet.
Step 7: Cut Out Pattern Pieces
With the entire pattern now assembled into a single sheet, locate the outlines of the pattern pieces for each .
These outlines are marked with specific dotted lines or other indicators, distinct from the dotted lines used for assembly.
Carefully cut out each pattern piece along its designated cutting line, ensuring to include the seam allowances as specified in the pattern (these are typically extra margins around the pieces for sewing).
Use sharp scissors to achieve clean edges, and double check that all necessary pieces are cut out.
